Petrel 3 Warranty

In September 2024 Shearwater released a bulletin on their Petrel 3 computers. This bulletin identified a problem with the computers, open circuit, and closed circuit. The problem can cause a failure, during a dive, which resets and disables the computer. They immediately released this bulletin and, according to affiliated manufacturers, stopped production and began implementing fixes. While the error wasn’t common, Shearwater encourages all users to get their Petrel 3s serviced to fix this error before using them.

If you have a Petrel 3 and are located in the United States Divetronix is the service center to handle your request. The process for this fix is very easy but not super easy to track down. I’ve done my best to summarize this process but you can call Divetronix or Shearwater with any questions. I have had a few computers go to service and Divetronix has a turn time of ~3 weeks as of this writing. I expect that time to go down as the initial batches of computers are serviced. There are almost 8,000 computers that require this service per my understanding.

Steps for getting the fix:

  • Read the Shearwater bulletin
  • Complete the digital Request Service Form for Divetronix. In the problem description, I wrote” I am sending for P3 recall service.”
  • Get your RMA number included in the email from Divetronix
  • Package and mail your computer to the address included in the Divetronix email

Once your package is received you can expect an update from Divetronix that it was received with an estimated time of completion. Overall this process is smooth, efficient, and easy. I’m happy to see Shearwater taking ownership of an issue and working hard to fix it. There is no cost to the end user for a fix. I paid for my shipping to Divetronix and I think that’s totally fair. Divetronix is great about communicating and being realistic with their turn times.
